Cortical interaction of bilateral inputs is similar for noxious and innocuous stimuli but leads to different perceptual effects

چکیده

The cerebral integration of somatosensory inputs from multiple sources is essential to produce adapted behaviors. Previous studies suggest that bilateral interact differently depending on stimulus characteristics, including their noxious nature. aim this study was clarify how evoked by laser stimuli, shocks, and innocuous shocks in terms perception brain responses. experiment comprised two conditions (right-hand stimulation concurrent both hands) which painful non-painful were delivered. Perception, somatosensory-evoked potentials (P45, N100, P260), laser-evoked (N1, N2 P2) event-related spectral perturbations (delta gamma oscillation power) compared between modalities. amplitude negative vertex (N2 or N100) the power delta/theta oscillations increased with unilateral condition, regardless type (P < 0.01). However, for 0.01), but not stimuli = 0.08). Despite similarities activity, interacted remained unchanged, increased. This may reflect a ceiling effect attentional capture warrants further investigations examine regulation such interactions bottom–up top–down processes.

Responses of primate SI cortical neurons to noxious stimuli.

Recordings were made from single SI cortical neurons in the anesthetized macaque monkey. Each isolated cortical neuron was tested for responses to a standard series of mechanical stimuli. The stimuli included brushing the skin, pressure, and pinch. The majority of cortical neurons responded with the greatest discharge frequency to brushing the receptive field, but neurons were found in areas 3b...

Hemodynamic and Light-Scattering Changes of Rat Spinal Cord and Primary Somatosensory Cortex in Response to Innocuous and Noxious Stimuli

Neuroimaging technologies with an exceptional spatial resolution and noninvasiveness have become a powerful tool for assessing neural activity in both animals and humans. However, the effectiveness of neuroimaging for pain remains unclear partly because the neurovascular coupling during pain processing is not completely characterized. Our current work aims to unravel patterns of neurovascular p...

A quantitative comparison of BOLD fMRI responses to noxious and innocuous stimuli in the human spinal cord

Recent studies have shown that functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can non-invasively assess spinal cord activity. Yet, a quantitative description of nociceptive and non-nociceptive responses in the human spinal cord, compared with random signal fluctuations in resting state data, is still lacking. Here we have investigated the intensity and spatial extent of blood oxygenation level de...

Keratinocytes mediate innocuous and noxious touch via ATP-P2X4 signaling

The first point of our body's contact with tactile stimuli (innocuous and noxious) is the epidermis, the outermost layer of skin that is largely composed of keratinocytes. Here, we sought to define the role that keratinocytes play in touch sensation in vivo and ex vivo. We show that optogenetic inhibition of keratinocytes decreases behavioral and cellular mechanosensitivity. These processes are...
